HSW120.8 Introduction to Creative Writing (specifically for Diploma and Grad Cert, assumes no prior knowledge of writing arts practice)

This subject introduces students to the foundations and practicalities of creative writing, with equal emphasis on poetry and short fiction. Students explore the foundations of English literature in the oral history and poetry of ancient societies and are introduced to the basic elements of traditional structured and free-verse poetry as they develop their own original poems. Students also consider the distinction between poetry and prose fiction, developing their own original short stories through an examination of the structure and purpose of narrative, the role of character, theme, voice, point-of-view and other literary techniques. This subject is an ideal platform for study and writing in other areas.
